DB2 Database Administrator 7771S

Location: Kansas City, MO

Description: The selected DB2 Database Administrator will be responsible for implementations and upgrades and use common database software (including utilities, administrative tools, job scheduling, and scripting) on a zOS platform. The environment is very homogenous and includes other O/S and RDBMS environments including IMS, Microsoft, Unix / UDB and Sybase. The selected DBA will be primarily responsible for the zOS data systems, but will be exposed to the entire environment. Responsibilities will include:

  • Physical database design and construction according to best practices and business requirements. This includes performance tuning for queries and the database, balanced against proper decisions concerning normalization and denormalization.
  • Redundancy management, including implementation, upgrades, and use of replication software products and tools
  • Capacity management, including forecasting for space, memory, processors, and backup media
  • Manage data according to retention requirements and policies, including utility-driven purge and archive processes
  • Safeguard data integrity, access and availability according to security procedures and policies
  • Ensure business continuity with appropriate backup and recovery processes, procedures, and testing to ensure point in time recovery for all types of data loss, including major catastrophic disaster
  • Provide 24x7 support on a rotational basis

What will be expected:

The selected DBA must have an advanced knowledge of and ability to use Mainframe z/OS, Unix AIX, and Windows systems. He/she will need an expert knowledge of DB2 v7 or higher on a z/OS mainframe environment including database administrative tools, data warehousing, relational concepts, and logical and physical data modeling with ERwin. Skills and experience with DBA tools and utilities, performance and tuning, backup and recovery with NetBackup, Korn shell, PowerShell, JCL, etc... to support the various database platforms is also important, though vendor specific tools are not necessarily required. Any expertise with SQL Server 2000/2005 on Windows 2000/2003, IMS v9 on a z/OS mainframe, UDB or Sybase on AIX and/or experience with Sybase Replication Server is a big plus.

Beyond pure technical skills, the candidate must have the ability to read, analyze, and interpret technical journals, write reports, business correspondence and procedure manuals and effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to employees of the organization, technology vendors, and IT colleagues. He/she should be able to define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions interpreting an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables while applying principles of logical thinking to a wide range of practical problems.
