Windows Systems Engineer 7745S
Location: Overland Park, KS
Description: The successful Windows Systems Engineer will work in a team environment providing advanced infrastructure solution design and implementation, large project management, advanced diagnostics and solution delivery. This is primarily a high-level systems engineering role, but also retains some responsibility for direct customer support. Role will include:
- Design, build, administer and configure systems and components with emphasis on standards, management, availability, performance and supportability
- Work with internal and external clients to collect pertinent information and perform diagnostic procedures to isolate and correct component or system related problems. Utilize a variety of diagnostic, administrative and remote support tools to effect real-time problem resolution.
- Strive to provide long term solutions (good fixes vs. quick fixes) that are appropriately aligned with key business processes and that are consistent with IT standards, policies and procedures.
- Serve as SME and PM to subordinate staff which includes coordinating and prioritizing daily tasks, mentoring, providing input for employee development and guiding policy compliance and standardized direction.
- Provide rotational 24x7 on-call support as required.
- Provide guidance and training to internal and external customers with emphasis on empowerment, independence and confidence as it relates to their use of provided technology.
- Propose and implement improvements to deployed technology solutions and strive to create better managed, more supportable, more useable, more secure computing environments for internal and external clients.
- Administer security in a Windows based LAN and Microsoft Exchange based e-mail environment.
- Work with vendors and partners to affect solutions or invoke warranty support and follow up as appropriate.
Time will approximately be divided up as follows:
- 10% Network Engineering – Install, configure and maintain cisco routers, VPN’s, switches, RAS, etc...
- 10% Security – Checkpoint and pix firewalls, IDS, virus, spyware, spam, etc...
- 30% Systems Administration – Windows advanced AD and Exchange (scripting, automation, integration)
- 20% Customer Service – help desk calls from pw resets to wan outages
- 10% Design and Architecture – meetings, project input, Visio, documentation, collaboration
- 20% Monitoring and Systems Management – asset management, operations, backup/restore, on-call, etc...
What will be expected:
The selected candidate must have strong systems administration and engineering abilities. This is a “hybrid systems / network” engineer role in a large enterprise, so candidates should be extremely well versed with Windows, SAN, security, virtualization, Citrix or Terminal Services, systems management, Active Directory, Exchange, DR/HA, scripting, etc… He/she also should also be very comfortable with configuring and fixing network equipment (primarily Cisco), routing protocols, various WAN technologies, WiFi, VPN, etc…
Technically, he/she should possess broad and advanced technical knowledge of client/server architectures including:
- Wired and wireless networking (protocols, routing, network design, VLAN, Cisco IOS)
LAN/WAN technologies (MPLS, Frame Relay, etc.) - Windows Server (MCSE/MCTS or equivalent knowledge and experience)
- Unix/Linux a plus
- Clustering and load balancing (MSCS, F5, WLBS, Veritas)
- Internet technologies (DNS, VPN, IPSec, SSL, SMTP, EDI (AS1/2/3) a plus)
- Messaging systems (Exchange – MCSE: Messaging or equivalent knowledge and experience)
- Thin client (Citrix, Terminal Server)
- Network security (Checkpoint FW, WEP/WPA, ACL, IDS, Antivirus, etc.)
- Virtualization (VMWare, Virtual Server)
- Advanced scripting and light programming to support systems management activities
- Systems management (Monitoring, SNMP, CIM, WMI, SMS, Lights Out, etc.)
- Remote access (VPN – client and B2B, IPSec, etc.)
Beyond technical skills, the candidate must be able to demonstrate the ability to work both independently and as an integral part of a small, but highly effective team and be able to prioritize work and multi-task effectively. He/she also must be able to communicate thoughts, ideas, details and situations effectively to clients, peers and superiors through oral and written means and in both technical and simplified layman’s terms.
